Diary of a traveling teacher

Being a travelling teacher is difficult.  Yes it's nice that I don't have to do report cards or conferences but my job has its rough moments too.  For example, I don't have a home base.  Not a place to hang my hat (or coat for that matter).  Some teachers are very perceptive and they realize right away that I don't have personal storage space and they are quick to offer me a corner or part of a drawer (Thank you!!) but most teachers are like I was when I was a classroom teacher.  I was too into the students to REALLY notice the world around me.  I could tell you what Tyler is into when my back is turned but I couldn't tell you what color shirt my parent helper was wearing.  I just didn't notice.  If I ever decide to go back into the classroom full time this is something I will definitely work on.  Paying more attention to the world around me while still focusing on why Anita is having trouble with a math problem.

Another dilemma of the travelling teacher is how much "stuff" should I carry in with me? At the beginning of the year I have a lot of assessment I have to do as part of our grant so the first month is usually assessment, assessment, assessment.  After all that is finished I get to finally have quality time with the students I will be working with throughout the year.  Thankfully I have the assessments which give me an idea of where I need to begin with each student because I usually only get a minute or two with each teacher a day. Since I work with Kindergartners I do a lot of letter/sound recognition the first two months.  Unfortunately a lot of the students I see don't have the opportunity to attend pre-school so all those educational and social bases need to be taught and reinforced.  I try to keep the basics with me so I don't have to travel with the full entourage but depending on the needs of the student I may have to bring in additional carts.  That's just for one day!

My car is a mess- always.  My husband is frustrated.  It's not unusual to find the random counting chip or sight word card between the seats of my SUV. Not to mention all the educational games in the trunk during the school year.  My son rolls his eyes but my 7 year old daughter...well she thinks it's Christmas every time we take the messy mobile. Inevitably she discovers a new game or a picture book which means...yes.....it makes it's way into the house.  My educational materials are like the BLOB.  The mess continuously expands until everything has been touched by it.  I also have a lot of students that have sensory issues and need to take sensory breaks so guess what that means? PLAYDOH! Glorious playdoh, Kinetic sand and shaving cream are also among my must haves.

My husband had this brilliant idea of buying me one of those monstrous storage lockers at Lowes. I think he dropped $400. on this puppy in the event that there may be some semblance of organization of my "stuff".  He put it together and actually gave me space in his precious garage.  He was so proud...until I put my "stuff" in it.  Even with organizing it with the utmost care I still had to hip shut the door so I could turn the key.

*sigh*

Camping crafts!

Hello!

Well what I thought was going to be a impromptu restful weekend away ended up being rather hectic! We decided to book a weekend at the KOA in Copake, NY.  A very nice place to visit but WOW do they give plenty of opportunities to be crafty.

The first was when we booked the trip.  The woman informed me that it is the weekend of Christmas in July and that Santa will be on hand to deliver presents.  Thank goodness I am one of those moms that overbuys stocking stuffers/Easter basket goodies etc... so I had something on hand to give my little monsters.  Unfortunately what I didn't have on hand was Christmas paper.  What I did instead was take brown craft paper and stamped Stampin up! Christmas stamps all over it.  Also, seeing that it was Christmas in July at a CAMPGROUND I also added some camping stamps.  I think even Santa was impressed.

The next opportunity to get crafty was later that afternoon when I went to their ceramics activity.  There were so many pieces to choose from! Of course the monsters chose big pieces which were abandoned not long after a quick slap of paint was applied.  (With a comment that it was too hard, too much work, and/or I want to play outside you can finish it Mom)  Sigh....my poor little gnome had to wait until last when I was completely finished with the other two projects.  Thankfully the husband and wife of Tea Time ceramics in Lee, MA were so wonderful and had so much patience! Here are the finished pieces.

My gnome

Not sure why these pics are being shown sideways.  I fixed them twice and this is what I get.   Well, at least they aren't blurry!

Always looking for any campgrounds in New England that offer me the opportunity to be crafty and to learn some new tricks.  Be sure to post them in the comment section if you know any.  Also be sure to follow me on Pinterest!

Really cute back to school organization ideas

Hello all,

Since I have been cleaning up my school stuff here at the house I figured I would check out to see how others organize their classrooms.  I would LOVE to see how teachers organize their home offices but not many people like to share that. (I wonder why....) Anyway here's a few cute shots I was able to snag from the web of highly organized spaces. I tried to give credit but sometime when I clicked on  the link it was dead. :(

20 Back to School Tips for Pre-K Teachers
I do this at home as well.  We use these to organize the small stuff in my stockpile area.  Perfect thing for toothbrushes, makeup, razors and whatnot.
Classroom Organization 102 | The Teaching Excellence Program
I used to use the back of the classroom door for no name papers (Since the kiddos see that all the time) This works too though and I like that it's crafty.

Classroom Organization
Theorganizedclassroomblog.com had this awesome idea of using these bins and concealing the clutter with paper.  The gears in my head are turning about how I can use this with my bins in my craft room at home!

Classroom Organization and Supplies - Easy Way to Interchange Artwork or Anchor Charts on a Bulletin Board
Here is a small hack but what an awesome way to display students work! So much better than dragging out the staple remover (which I constantly lose) and wasting time stapling.  Wish I thought of this when I had a classroom. Although I could use this at home with my kiddos artwork.

Anyhow.... I am sure once the school year sets in I will forward photos of the classrooms I visit and what kind of classroom organization works well.   Be sure to follow me and add me to your BLOG subscriptions.

rainbow loom bracelets as incentives in the classroom.

I am a travelling teacher (sounds like I'm selling snake oil) so I have to keep my entourage to a minimum. Some days I get to bring in a lot of stuff depending on if we are doing an arts and crafts activity but sadly I usually don't get to carry much.  One thing I like to do at home and bring in as an incentive are those rainbow loom bracelets. You would not believe the amount of work you can get out of a kindergarten kiddo using a rainbow loom bracelet as the proverbial carrot.

Here are a few of the bracelets I have created.   They do not have to be as elaborate but more funky=more work from the kiddo.

Some creation I made up I think?

The Bird of Paradise

The Warrior

I am also not the type of person who can learn something like this from looking at a book and figuring it out.  Isn't that why You Tube was invented? Here are a couple of links to help you get started.

Bird of Paradise bracelet
Shamrock bracelet
and my favorite The Warrior

They really don't take a long time to make.  We RV a lot so while we are on the road I usually make a ton of bracelets and store them for the upcoming year.   I also make them while watching TV (makes those scary movies a little more bearable)

Well I hope this helps.  Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. :)

Education Dreams and the story of my little man

I had one of those dreams last night that I didn't want to wake up from.  I had dreamt that my son (now 12) was a full grown man and was moving into his own home.  In the dream he was a sixth grade social studies teacher and was going to start a brand new school year within the next few days.  As I was walking up the driveway to his home, arms laden with boxes from his childhood (army men, assorted pirate bric a brac), I could feel myself waking up from this dream.  I could feel myself not wanting to wake up and fought so hard to stay in the dream.  I wanted to see what my son looked like.  I desperately wanted to see the man he would grow up to be.

When J was one week old he was diagnosed with a Ventricular septal defect (VSD).  Basically, he was born with holes in his heart.   I remember the night they discovered the holes.  How I held my little baby and sobbed...was it something I did? Something I ate? It took so long for me to have a viable pregnancy. Was this some way that my body ruined his? The following day we went to a specialist who quelled my fears.  J was a normal baby and toddler.  Getting into a lot trouble but always a healthy eater.  His monthly visits to the cardiologist were at first stressful then, as the holes started healing, the visits became few and far between.  On October 3 2007, in his Kindergarten year, we were told that J would have to have open heart surgery.  Definitely not the news we ever wanted to hear.  There was too much blood pumping through his heart and the pressure caused by the last hole made an obstruction in the opposite ventricle.  The doctors wanted to do the surgery immediately but because of illness it was postponed until December.

Eight hours.

The surgery that would repair my sons heart took only eight hours.  I remember sitting in the waiting room, emailing the family with updates, crying, and praying that my little boy would come out healthy.

And he did.

The doctors removed the obstruction, repaired the holes (He found two more!) and my boy was good.  All in all my strong little man had 8 holes in his heart.  He recovered as only a little kindergartner could do- with lots of ice cream and popcorn and is now a healthy boy of 12.  Although he is quiet and reserved I am so proud of the boy he's grown up to be.  His scar is the only visible reminder of that day.

So in my dream when I desperately wanted to see my boy grown I did get a glimpse of the handsome man with the unruly brown hair.  I looked into those beautiful brown eyes and said "Don't forget to send your students a letter introducing yourself!" Gotta love dreams.

It's getting there!

Getting there is have the battle .....right?

Well in-between figuring out this whole blogging thing and how to add my affiliates I have been cleaning out my school closet (good grief!)!

This closet is truly the elephant in the room.  I have been hoarding (yes hoarding) my school items on the kitchen table all summer long.  Every now and then I get the big sigh from hubby and the comment "boy it would be nice to eat at the table for once this summer".  So today is the day of the big clean out and organization but holy crow where do I begin? Sorting and organizing is a start.  I am a travelling reading teacher so I have my own special sort of mess of phonemic awareness books, read alouds, centers for those read alouds, and some other ditties thrown in for good measure.  Once that gets organized (somewhat) I will have the opportunity to work on some new centers and activities for this upcoming year.  The creative side of me is saying- Just create it now and everything will find it's place but the practical side of me says REALLY???

Well while I am getting sorted and organized please take a look at these Pinterest links I have found on organization.  I think a trip to Target, Walmart, or the Dollar store will be in order before the end of the day!

50 organizing ideas for every room in your house!
